How do our garbage disposals work?

InSinkErator® garbage disposals are designed to grind tough food waste, helping reduce particles left behind that can cause sink odor. Our Heavy Duty Dura‑Drive® induction motors feature jam‑busting torque for grinding power and durability. Additionally, our innovative design keeps food scraps in the 3D Grind Zone and directs water to rinse the chamber walls clean, for a fresh sink.

Landfill crisis

Food waste contributes to landfill methane emissions.

The U.S. EPA estimates that food waste constitutes about 24% of municipal solid waste (MSW) disposed in U.S. landfills, and that food waste is responsible for 58% of methane emissions from MSW landfills.1 Using a garbage disposal reduces the amount of food waste taken to landfills and the resulting methane emissions. Many wastewater treatment plants can also convert disposal waste into renewable energy and beneficial fertilizer.1.U.S. EPA, Quantifying Methane Emissions from Landfilled Food Waste, October 2023.

Using a garbage disposal is easy!

Never put fats, oils, or grease into a garbage disposal.

  1. Run a steady stream of cold water into the sink before turning on the garbage disposal.

  2. Turn on the disposal before placing any food waste into it.

  3. Gradually feed food waste into the disposal's bladeless grind system.

  4. Avoid putting large amounts of food waste all at once as this may slow the grinding process.

  5. Once the food waste has been broken down, turn the disposal off and let water run for a few seconds to flush the drain pipe.

Garbage disposal installation made EZ.

Our EZ Connect disposals are easier to install than ever before. These disposals feature our EZ Connect Hardwire Adapter (EZ Connect Cord sold separately), removable dishwasher inlet plug, EZ Grip Handles, and Lift & Latch® Technology to simplify installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to pick a garbage disposal?

There are two ways to approach picking a garbage disposal.

  1. Use a garbage disposal comparison chart where you can easily identify features most important to you such as horsepower, sound, or warranty.
  2. Use a garbage disposal product selector tool. This will take into account your personal life-style for those who are not sure how much horsepower they actually need.

How to use a garbage disposal?

  1. Turn on sink cold water. Cold water holds fats and oils together allowing them to be washed through the drain pipe.
  2. Turn on disposer. (wall switch or button switch).
  3. Gradually feed food scraps into the disposal's bladeless grind system. Mix up scraps if possible.
  4. Run until grinding stops; turn off disposer.
  5. Keep water running for a few seconds to rinse the disposer.

What is the disposal in the sink called?

A garbage disposal is the most widely accepted name in the United States. Others include:

  1. Garbage Disposer
  2. Sink Disposal
  3. Food Waste Disposer (UK)
  4. Garburator (Canada)
  5. Food Grinder
  6. Sink Grinder

What is a continuous feed garbage disposal?

A continuous feed garbage disposal is most common and is powered by a switch (wall or air). The disposal is run continually until all food is fed through. Alternatively, a batch feed garbage disposal is one that the switch is in the disposal cover, so the disposal runs only when the cover is on.
